Meet the Hindu Bagpipers Bringing Cultures Together

Ever Widening Circles

Some combinations just work and bring us joy. Think about peanut butter and jelly, cold weather and big sweaters, bagpipes and Indian music. You know, the classics.

What? You aren’t familiar with that last pairing? Well, let us introduce you to the Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Pipe Band.

The first Indian-Scottish pipe band was founded in Nairobi, Kenya in 1955. Their mission to bring a diverse community of individuals together. Now there are over 227 members in 6 bands around the globe.

These bands are an example of what can happen when cultures find creative ways to join together. Let’s turn to one of our favorite channels, Great Big Story, to learn a bit more.

Why It Matters

Art and music have an incredible way of helping us see what’s possible. And this is especially true when we embrace our cultural diversity—particularly when that can seem a little daunting.

This creativity provides a space where we can communicate in unthreatening ways. Which allows us to build common ground for answering tougher questions. A lot of the time these collaborations create something wonderful.

We are fortunate enough to experience a world of cultures through the internet. When we share our traditions and find ways to combine them we can change what’s possible for everybody!

Let's Talk About It
  1. How can music act as a way of sharing culture?
  2. How are peoples’ histories reflected in their musical traditions?
  3. Can you think of other examples of cross-cultural collaboration in music or beyond?

Great Big Story

Great Big Story is a global media company devoted to cinematic storytelling. Headquartered in New York, with a bureau in London, our studios create and distribute micro-docs and short films, as well as series for digital, social, TV and theatrical release.
