The Blind Astronomer Gazing into the Universe
How does a legally blind astronomer see the night sky?
Due to an eye condition, Tim Doucette of Nova Scotia underwent surgery that left his pupils permanently enlarged. This means his eyes are unable to contract in the presence of light. So, during the day, his vision is bright and overexposed.
During the night, however, Tim takes advantage of his ability to see more light by gazing into the night sky. Allowing him to see an entirely different view of the universe! Here’s Great Big Story with more.
Why It Matters
Tim Doucette didn’t always appreciate his eyesight. It is difficult to struggle with everyday realities. But he was able to find joy and inspiration in the night sky and using his unique eyesight, he gained a perspective that many strive for.
At the end of the video Doucette makes an inspirational point on gazing into the universe.
“It makes you realize that all of your problems… it really just doesn’t matter. You realize that you are a part of this universe.”
