Astronaut Chic: Space Suits!

Ever Widening Circles

How do you scratch your nose if you’re wearing a space suit?

This video from Seeker answers that question and more! The human body is used to the Earth’s particular environment, so when people go to space, it takes careful engineering and a lot of testing to produce a suit that will protect them. From extreme temperatures to a lack of breathable atmosphere, designers contend with many hostile factors when creating these suits that keep astronauts safe in the most inhospitable environments.

Take a look!

Why It Matters

Space suits have done their job since we first sent people into space. But designers weren’t satisfied with “good enough” and have been re-inventing these amazing pieces of technology for decades. It’s important to remember how incredible something can become when it’s put through a process of rigorous revision.

Space suits are necessary for space travel–without them, astronauts wouldn’t survive. By streamlining these suits through constant editing, the creators have made space travel more efficient and are expanding the possibilities of human activity in space!

Let's Talk About It
  1. What are some of the considerations that would have to be made when designing a space suit for Mars instead of the Space Station?
  2. How do you think technology as advanced space suit design?
  3. What fields of research do you think have to overlap to create something as complex as a space suit?
