From MIT Engineer to Rockstar

Ever Widening Circles

Tom Scholz went from being an engineer to playing music in front of thousands of screaming fans.

The band BOSTON was formed in Boston, Massachusetts, during the 1970s. They gained popularity right after their first single, More Than a Feeling was released, and their self titled album generated 3 Top 40 hits, bringing in more than 17 million dollars in sales—making the album the biggest selling debut in rock history.

But before all of this, BOSTON’s guitarist, Tom Scholz, was working at Polaroid after getting his masters degree in engineering from MIT.

So, how do you go from engineer to rockstar? Here’s Tom telling his story for NOVA’s Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers.

Why It Matters

You never know how whatever you’re doing right now in life will make new opportunities possible for you in the future. Innovate with the circumstances you find yourself in. Use them. Keep your eyes open for the opportunities that use your unique set of skills!

What we think our future will look can with every person, skill, and hobby we pick up along the way. New doors will continue to open, your interests will always be piqued, and suddenly, if you are paying attention, the path you’ve laid out for yourself can take a surprise turn.

Let's Talk About It
  1. How does music connect to other fields of study?
  2. What are some other skills or academic interests that could be used together?
  3. What unique life experiences have shaped what you are passionate about or want to do in the future?
