Snake Robots: Can You Watch This Without Squirming?

Ever Widening Circles

What happens when you bring nature and robotics together?

The snake robot is just one example of what’s possible with the future of robotics! More and more engineers and designers are turning to nature to inspire solutions to our problems. With inspiration from the way snakes move, the snake robot has the potential to explore the world in new ways, and even save lives! This impressive innovation is just one example of biomimicry; a growing field of science at the intersection of engineering, design, and biology.

Here’s a quick look from the awesome robotics channel, cmurobotics.

Why It Matters

What if we looked to nature more often for inspiration? Nature has already found ingenious was to solve the many problems life on this planet faces. What could we learn from it?

The field of biomimicry explores the intersection of engineering, biology, and design. The way plants and animals, grow, adapt, and move provides scientists and engineers studying biomimicry with endless inspiration. From influencing the shape of a bullet train to informing the way robotics of the future move, we have a lot to learn from the environment around us!

Let's Talk About It
  1. What are some of the ways a snake robot could be used?
  2. What are other examples of innovation inspired by nature?
  3. Why is nature a good source of inspiration for solving complex problems?
