When Robotics and Music Collide!

Ever Widening Circles

Will robots be the musicians of the future? Or can robotics enhance our musical experience?

Jason Barnes discovered his passion for music at a young age. Then, after he lost his hand in an accident his life as a musician seemed lost. That’s when Gil Weinberg, a musician, and professor from Georgia Tech, came in. With the help some innovative researchers and a few robots, Jason was once again able to make music.

This piece from The Atlantic takes a look at these awesome innovations.

Why It Matters

Imagine what it would be like to experience this human-robot hybrid band! It’s incredible to think about the potential in innovations like the robotic drumming hand or Shimon, the musician robot.

Inventions like Jason’s drumming hand open up new opportunities to create devices to make the world more accessible. While Shimon makes us think about our relationship to music and whether or not we think robots and technology are capable of creating art or music.

Perhaps Jason’s robotic hand is a great example of how the worlds of robotics and the arts can be joined together. Combined, they could create new advancements in music and technology!

Let's Talk About It
  1. Do you think robots can make music or art?
  2. How could technologies like Jason’s hand influence other fields outside of music?
  3. How do you think technology is changing the way we play, listen to, or produce music?

The Atlantic

The Atlantic is a magazine that began in 1857. They focus on challenging assumptions and pursuing truth by continuing to explore, going beyond to what matters, embracing a diversity of perspectives and immersing themselves, and their audience, in the world—instead of escaping from it.
