Why Are Our Phones Addicting?

Ever Widening Circles

How many times a day do you find yourself checking your phone or other screens? How easy is it to get lost in your favorite apps? Do you sometimes feel a need to pick up your phone just in case you missed a notification?

You’re not alone in your phone addiction.

In fact, your phone is designed to make you feel that way! Smartphones, iPads, tablets, apps, they all use design to make us spend more time on them. There’s good news, though! Once you learn how your phone is trying to get your attention, you can set up ways to keep yourself from feeding your phone addiction.

To run us through what’s happening in our brains when we find ourselves sucked into our phone and what we can do to avoid this cycle here’s a great video from Vox.

Why It Matters

Technology helps us connect more, do more, and innovate better than ever, but like any new invention, we have to figure out the best and safest way to use it.

Educating ourselves about the technology we use, is critical. Who uses our data? Why do I feel so addicted to my phone? What algorithms are controlling what I see?

We don’t have to be afraid of technology, but we do need to be curious about the impact it has on our lives. If we are more educated consumers and technology users we help develop better technologies for the future.

Let's Talk About It
  1. How often do you check your phone or devices?
  2. Now that you know more about the design of apps, which apps do you use most? Are they using some of the techniques mentioned in the video to keep you engaged?
  3. How does knowing more about the technology you use change the way you look at it?
