The Fossil Record of Mythical Beasts

Ever Widening Circles

Are mythical beasts real? You’ve probably heard of griffins, fairies, and Cyclops, but let’s find out what might have inspired belief in these popular mythical creatures!

Some paleontologists suggest that the stories behind a few of these myths began with fossils discovered before the 1800s, when people didn’t know it was possible for a species to go extinct. To explore some of these theories and unearth some fascinating fossils we turn you to The Brain Scoop!

Why It Matters

It just goes to show that we make new discoveries and expand our understanding of the world every day! We are in a great position to examine our past and rethink what is actually taking place as we progress in science and technology. More importantly, stories like these remind us that we never have all of the information.

Mistakes are made constantly, and in a few hundred years ideas that we hold now may be looked back on as silly. Discovery is important, but rediscovery can be just as fulfilling!

Let's Talk About It
  1. What was your favorite myth that was discussed in the video?
  2. Think of other examples of a history-changing invention or discovery like extinction. What were its impacts on the time period? (examples: evolution, climate change, steam engine, assembly line)
  3. What have you learned in the past year that has changed the way you think?

The Brain Scoop

Hosted by Emily, the Chief Curiosity Correspondent of The Field Museum in Chicago, former volunteer of the University of Montana Zoological Museum. The Brain Scoop share the amazing things in the Field Museum collection with the world!
