Ever Wondered How Bees Make Honey?

Ever Widening Circles

Did you know that honey is one of the most complex things to make?

For honey bees, honey is just a small part of their complex society and science. And their society is intertwined with ours in ways we often forget to appreciate.

Today though, we shine a spotlight on these incredible creatures, with PBS’s It’s Okay To Be Smart explaining to us how exactly bees make honey and the hive power that goes into it!

Why It Matters

Bees are one of the most helpful animals to humans, they are responsible for keeping most of our food alive. Without the help of bees pollinating plants, we wouldn’t have many of our fruits and veggies. The honey making process is important too; first of all, honey is delicious, but more importantly, this process shows the high level of communication throughout a hive and shows how animals have a language of their own and depend on each other to survive.

Honey bees are often underappreciated until one realizes how much we depend on them every day.

Let's Talk About It
  1. What did you find most interesting about honey bees?
  2. Why do you think pollination is so important?
  3. What might happen if we lost honey bees?

It’s Okay To Be Smart

Joe Hanson, Ph.D. is a curious group of atoms in a curious universe, and he’s here to tell you how it all works. New science videos come out every week on the It’s Okay To Be Smart Channel!
