Did You Know We Can Garden in Space?

Ever Widening Circles

In order for us to go further into space and possibly colonize a new planet, we’ll need to find a way to bring plants along with us!

So, how are we gardening in space? Right now there are astronauts living onboard the International Space Station or ISS. The ISS is the astronauts’ home away from home orbiting the Earth. It’s also a zero gravity laboratory, and, to date, over 2,400 research investigations have been conducted. One of these lines of discovery is looking into how we can grow fresh vegetables in space.

This might seem like a straightforward process, but without gravity, things can get tricky! Seeker, tells us all about what ingenious scientists, astronauts, and their plants have been up to recently.

Why It Matters

What does this all mean? As they talked about, if we want to go beyond our moon, perhaps to Mars, we’ll need a way to grow food. Researchers at NASA also believe that gardening in space could be good for Astronauts’ morale. Helping to boost the mood of the crew as they care for these plants.

When we think about going to new planets or even feeding people here on Earth, it’s important to think about how difficult it can be to grow enough food to feed people. We may not be farming on Mars soon, but it is certainly fascinating to think about what a future where we could be gardening on the moon or on Mars would look like!

Let's Talk About It
  1. What are some of the challenges to growing plants in space?
  2. How could learning about growing food in space teach us to farm more effectively on Earth?
  3. What has the idea of gardening in space made you want to investigate further?
