Discover the Man Who Sees Only with Sound! He’s Redefining What’s “Impossible”!

Ever Widening Circles

Daniel Kish is a blind man who sees the world with sound!

He travels the globe by himself teaching others to see with senses that we all have but are unaware of. Using the brain’s ability to adapt to blindness, Daniel “sees” much like bats and dolphins. Using sound, he is able to use a form of echolocation to listen to the way sound bounces off objects and turn that information into images he can use to navigate the world.

Check out how he uses “flash sonar” to see the world around him, and how he’s teaching others to live more independently this way, too!

Why It Matters

Daniel’s work though Visoneers (formerly World Access for the Blind) is helping people with blindness walk through the world with more confidence. Daniel and many of the students he teaches are able to ride bicycles, navigate without the help of other people, and react to changes in their surroundings.

He’s not only giving people more independence, but he’s also redefining what impossible means. Before you heard Daniel’s story, you probably would have thought it was impossible for a person without eyes to see the world around him. Now, your understanding of what’s possible has shifted. What other ways can our idea of the impossible change?

Let's Talk About It
  1. How do sighted people use sound to help navigate their environments?
  2. How does having a skill like flash sonar help a blind person live more independently?
  3. What are some other innovations that help people with disabilities live with more independence?
