Bill Gates Drinks Sewage: Introducing the Omniprocessor

Ever Widening Circles

Two glasses of water sit in front of you, which one will you drink?

Oh… here’s the catch: one of the glasses contains bottled water, while the other was very recently fresh sewage, filtered using the Omniprocessor. This remarkable innovation can process a moving van’s worth of sewage each day and turn it into 10,800 liters of water. That’s enough drinking water to keep 3700 people healthy, every day!

Let’s learn a bit more about the science behind the Omniprocessor from Thegatesnotes on YouTube…

Why It Matters

As places around the globe develop, we will need to come up with new solutions to some of the most essential problems we face. We will always have to deal with waste, have clean drinking water, and power our world. Technology like the Omniprocessor is a great example of how coming up with new solutions to old problems can lead to an even better outcome.

Technology in the developing world doesn’t have to be the same as it is for other places. In fact, there is much more room for innovation in places where systems don’t yet exist. Instead of having to adapt to existing, aging infrastructure, developing nations can come up with custom solutions that are more efficient in our current world.

Let's Talk About It
  1. What are some systems we use now that are inefficient or could use an upgrade?
  2. Why do you think technology like the Omniprocessor may be hard for people to adopt or install?
  3. What is the benefit of innovating for local problems? What might be some of the setbacks?
