Chickpeas: Doing the Hum-Most!

Ever Widening Circles

Extraordinary things surround us every single day, and we often don’t realize it. Would you have guessed that chickpeas are one of them? They’re staples in dishes around the world and throughout history… but why is this?

These funny little legumes have a history (almost) richer than their flavor and texture. Yet a lot of us don’t really know anything about them. Let alone know how chickpeas grow, or how they traveled around the world.

To find all of this out, we’re going to turn to one of our absolute favorite food-education creators, True Food TV.

Why It Matters

The more we know about the food we consume, the healthier the decisions we make. With this knowledge, appreciating our food becomes a part of the joy of eating. Knowing where our food comes from helps us choose healthier options and more deeply appreciate the connection between food and culture.

Knowledge lets us appreciate the little things, like the food on our plates, new corners of the natural world, or the history of a technology we use every day. The more knowledge we have, the more we walk through the world with a little more appreciation.

Let's Talk About It
  1. What are some of the foods grown or produced in your area?
  2. If you met somebody who didn’t understand how those foods were made, how would you explain that process to them?
  3. How can a greater appreciation of how food is made help people make healthier choices, or learn about another person’s culture?

TRUE FOOD TV

We’re a food obsessed world. But how many of us know what a coffee plant looks like? Or how the chickpeas in our hummus grow? Or what canola oil is made from? TRUE FOOD TV reveals the untold stories of our food, one crop at a time.
