Exploring the Eight Senses

Ever Widening Circles

What if I told you that you don’t have just five senses, but eight?

Yes, we have touch, taste, sight, smell, and hearing, but what are these mysterious three extra senses? Let’s find out more about your extra senses, and how these eight senses help us to live! Here to explain more, SciShow.

Why It Matters

So now you know a little bit about thermoception, proprioception, and equilibrioception! These are fancy words for how we keep our balance, tell what temperature it is, and our knowledge of our body in space. There’s a lot we’re still learning about what makes our body work, and the brain is an area that holds huge potential for discovery!

Isn’t the human body incredible?

Let's Talk About It
  1. Did the three new senses surprise you? What did you expect?
  2. Are there senses that other animals demonstrate that you would like to have? What are they?
  3. Think about your senses, and think about how you interact with the world. Are there still some things that you can sense, but can’t explain why? (e.g. sensing when it’s going to rain or someone watching you)

SciShow

SciShow explores the unexpected. Seven days a week, Hank Green, Michael Aranda, and Olivia Gordon delve into the scientific subjects that defy our expectations and make us even more curious!
