Even Without A House, Girl Scouts Find A Home

Ever Widening Circles

Some people find themselves without a safe, stable place to live. Giselle Burgess was once in this situation, unable to find a safe place for herself and her five children. There’s a happy ending, though! She and her kids have a home now, and Giselle is working to keep other young people from feeling isolated and ashamed of their circumstances the way her children once did.

She’s doing this through her work with Girl Scout Troop 6000. Take a look at this video from Great Big Story, where we learn about Girl Scouts who are finding a home with each other!

Why It Matters

Everyone needs a safe, comfortable place to find home and community. Whether you find it with family, at school, or as a part of an organization.  Just like communities, not all homes look the same, and in difficult times, sometimes home isn’t a house. Maybe home can be the other Girl Scouts in your troop who make you smile when you’re feeling sad.

Bad things can happen to anybody– any one of us could experience homelessness at any point in our lives. This happens for a variety of reasons and doesn’t mean that people who experience homelessness are worth any less than people who have comfortable homes. The people you might see who don’t have a place to call home are not all that different from you. What is important though is that every person is able to feel a sense of safety, belonging, and community.

Let's Talk About It
  1. What makes a place feel like home or a community to you?
  2. Why might it be important for people to feel a sense of community and stability?
  3. What are some of the ways you see people building communities, and how might you be able to help?
